Apple introduces new, free Music Memos app

The stock samples sound great but after a bit you'll want to dive deeper.

The inspiration is Voice Memos, the Apple audio recording app built into the iPhone, which was designed for dictation, and beloved by musicians looking for a tool to belt out a quick riff, lyric or musical idea.

Music Memos is a new iOS app from Apple that aims to make it easier to take note of any ideas you have for some new music.

"Music Memos is like if those two apps came together to form some kind of superpower for songs", says famous singer-songwriter and producer Ryan Adams who has been quoted in Apple's press release, "it quite literally blew my mind how Music Memos could transform a single guitar idea into a whole composition", he added.

Music Memos also supports iCloud so that your recordings are available on other devices.

On top of this, Music Memos can also provide basic notation displaying the chords that have been played; then making the tracks openable in GarageBand or Logic Pro X for further development. "When those moments happen, open Music Memos to record high-quality, uncompressed audio through the built-in mic in your iPhone, or connect an external microphone", explains Apple's promotional site for the new app. The app is closely integrated with GarageBand for iOS, which has received a major update today. If you've got an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, 3D Touch support allows for pressure-sensitivity in playing instruments.

Apple pre-loaded the new GarageBand update with a bunch of loop templates that spans genres like EDM, Hip Hop, Dubstep and Rock, but you can also create your own loops from scratch.

Live Loops are said to be inspired by DJ hardware controllers and drum machines.

In Voice Memos, once you've recorded, you can share the file in e-mail, text or Dropbox. You'll need lots of trial and error on this to get it right. The app has an expanded library of amps for bass players, controls recording and a new EQ. GarageBand 2.1 is free with new iOS devices with 32GB of storage and up, and existing users can upgrade for free if they have iOS 9 or later installed.

The experience is certainly optimized for the iPad Pro, but all of these features detailed are available on the less massive iPads and iPhones (as long as they're running iOS9).
