Orioles fall to Athletics 8-4 in doubleheader opener

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jesse Hahn, center, wipes his face as he visits with catcher Josh Phegley, left, and pitching coach Curt Young in the third inning of the second baseball game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, Saturday, May 7, 2016. Yonder Alonso and Marcus Semien scored on the play.

- Andrew Triggs was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and was in the A's bullpen for the second game of the day/night doubleheader.

If he wanted a how-to primer in that, he only needed to look at Game 1, when Rich Hill was able to minimize the number of opportunities the Orioles got.

Lowrie has hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games with a.400/.437/.462 slash line. He failed to get through five innings for the first time in 2016 on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, allowing a season-high six runs on seven hits and four walks. It was the A's first doubleheader in exactly two years.

"A lot of guys came in after game one and took some naps", Reddick said. All of Hill's wins have been away from O.co Coliseum. It's never easy, and never a fun afternoon.

"I just want to continue to get hits when they count, because those are the ones that help us win", Semien said. "But when you win the first one, you know, everybody's hell bent on trying to win the second game".

Davis snapped an 0-for-16 drought with his seventh homer in the last 11 games against the A's. Semien had given Hill the lead with an RBI single in the second inning off Baltimore starter Mike Wright before ending the day's scoring for Oakland with a two-run homer in the eighth off reliever Brian Matusz. Josh Reddick collected three hits and an RBI, while Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the A's. He finished his outing by striking out the side in the eighth.

The Orioles jumped on the right-hander with a four-run third and saddled the A's with a 5-2 loss in the finale of a day/night doubleheader at Camden Yards.

Baltimore recorded just one run in the final 22 innings of their set with the Yankees but it led to a 1-0 walk-off victory in 10 innings on Thursday, giving them two of three in the series and an 11-4 record at Camden Yards. Relying heavily on a sweeping curveball, the left-hander struck out five and permitted only one runner past first base over the first five innings.

Hill is 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA on the road.

Orioles: Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3, 5.20) was selected to pitch in the nightcap.

Semien put Oakland up with an RBI single in the second inning. Crisp had two singles, a double and scored twice in the opener.

Trumbo's ninth homer made it 6-3 in the third.

"I've never done that in my life, so it's kind of amusing, " Triggs said, adding that any verbal jabs that came his way were well-deserved.

Orioles: Baltimore selected the contract of INF Paul Janish from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned LHP T.J. McFarland to the same minor league club. McFarland was the 26th man for the second game. Boring issued a walk to load the bases, then struck out Jonathan Schoop to keep the Orioles away. After I give up the first one, I've got to lock it in for the next one.
