Mall of America will be closed on Thanksgiving (sorta)

The PC army behind the War on Christmas-the diabolical project to strike the words "Merry Christmas" from the English language, thus driving a stake through the heart of American life-have succeeded in shutting down our nation's biggest mall on its second most important holiday, Thanksgiving.

Given its size and national status, the Thanksgiving Day closure could lead to other malls and major retailers to follow suit. If some stores do open, the mall will provide security to those stores, according to the Star Tribune.

In the last few years, the mall stayed open into Thanksgiving night as shoppers took advantage of deals and sales, but the Star Tribune reported that it will instead officially open at 5 a.m. the day after.

By making this move, Renslow added that the mall also hoped to "bring that special magic back to Black Friday". This year they mean to do that by letting their employees head home for the holiday, in order to be "going big beginning Black Friday morning".

"Mall of America will be closed on Thanksgiving", the mall said in a statement on Wednesday. Crowds of shoppers have shown up these earlier sales, justifying the change for retailers. Last year, the Mall of America encouraged its stores to open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving and more than 150 of its stores did so, majority staying open through the night.

Still, opening earlier and earlier can have some benefits: J.C. Penney credited its 3 p.m. opening on Thanksgiving previous year, an hour before Macy's (and three earlier than in 2014), for its strong quarter.

Doors will re-open at 5 a.m. on Friday the 25 for the actual Black Friday festivities.

If that happens, we may be saying goodbye to Black Friday creep.

Most other retailers and shopping malls have not yet announced their Thanksgiving and Black Friday hours yet.

The mall will still host the Walk to End Hunger on Thanksgiving morning.
