The governor's office says Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is being updated about a lockdown by an official at Redstone Arsenal, but the official couldn't provide any details.
Regardless, the hospital they "have heightened our emergency department's preparedness" because of Redstone Arsenal possible active shooter. Officials had said on Facebook that an active shooter training exercise was planned for this week. Images on social media showed an ambulance and what appeared to be civilians standing outside the Sparkman Center, which includes multiple buildings with offices, an auditorium, cafeteria and an interior courtyard. About two hours later, the all-clear was given and officials said there were no confirmed injuries or arrests. Employees at the base reportedly were sent an email this morning alerting them that this situation was not a drill.
The Arsenal's Twitter account posted that the "installation is locked down".
Redstone announced the situation in a morning tweet. "I am praying for a swift resolution to this matter", she said in a statement.
'The goal of this exercise is to enhance the workforce's ability to respond to a real active shooter event. "Please watch the news to stay updated".
An alert from the Marshall Space Flight Center said a "situation exists near the Sparkman Center, RSA bldg".
The Redstone Arsenal is military installation in northern Alabama.
A lockdown was lifted for most of Redstone Arsenal about 12:30 p.m. today, and the U.S. Army installation's gates were reopening.
In addition to hosting Army Aviation and Missile Command, which tests and develops missile programs, the almost 38,000 acre post hosts 70 other organizations, including the FBI, Air Force units and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.
