Ohio State Releases Statement On Urban Meyer Investigation

On Thursday night, Ohio State announced it formed an independent board "related to the investigation involving Urban Meyer".

Courtney Smith can explain better than most why Urban Meyer and The Ohio State University are under the spotlight. "I've seen other coaches who would keep players and try to rehab them ... but I think it (zero tolerance on domestic violence) should be a rule in all of college football".

McMurphy reported that Zach Smith was arrested for allegedly abusing Courtney in 2009 when she was pregnant, then again twice in 2015, and most recently was arrested for criminal trespassing at his ex-wife's residence on July 18.

Hours after Courtney Smith's interview was posted online Wednesday, Ohio State said it was conducting an investigation into the allegations and Meyer was being placed on leave.

Ohio State has not commented on the Meyer situation since announcing he was placed on leave.

Smith was sacked last week after an accusation of domestic violence against his wife Courtney came to light.

Zach Smith was sacked last week after an OH court granted a domestic violence protective order to Courtney Smith. In it, he also says it's "beyond doubt" that Meyer did not cover up a crime or witness one just after he says Ohio State should wait for all of the facts of the case before acting. Smith is a long-time Urban Meyer friend and assistant, and the grandson of former OSU coach Earle Bruce.

Smith was - and should have been - fired last week.

Meyer was out of coaching for a season but was hired by Ohio State in November 2011.

Two police reports filed in 2015 in Ohio's Powell County, after the Smiths separated in June of that year, accused Zach Smith of abuse. He pleaded not guilty, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday.

"I can't say it didn't happen because I wasn't there", Meyer said.

Meyer told reporters last week that he didn't know anything about the 2015 incident. I've never had a conversation about it. I know nothing about it. I told people to go find out for me.
