World Superbikes Race 2 Report & Results - Portimao 2011

by Mark

The riders lined up for race two and the final race of the year in Portimao with Jonathan Rea on pole and Carlos Checa alongside.

In a similar start to race one, Rea got off to a good start with the two Yamaha’s of Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri right behind.

Laverty though made a couple of late lunges and was in first place half-way through the second lap, a lap later Rea was taken by the second Yamaha of Melandri.

Max Biaggi was running down in tenth but with Laverty in first place he was in danger of losing his championship place unless he finished third or better.

Melandri made a mistake that allowed Rea to go past into second but it was only briefly as Melandri squeezed past at the end of the straight on the next lap.

Biaggi made steady progress through the field following his team mate Leon Camier and was up to seventh with 14 laps remaining.

The race was a bit of a procession until the final few laps when Melandri finally made a move on his team mate to takes first place.

On the final two laps Rea and Laverty began to battle for second place, Rea took him but Laverty slid and kept his cool to take it back a few corners later.
