It's unclear how many Oculus Rift fans out there already have a rig capable of powering the new generation of virtual reality experiences.
"When we see, first all of, with the install base of the PlayStation 4 now close to 36 million units, that there in of itself is a huge audience that we're going to cater to number one".
The PlayStation VR headset has yet to receive a final release date for all regions.
Oculus is offering a Rift and PC bundle for $1,499.
But while SuperData predicts that most of that will come from cheap mobile VR devices in 2016, it notes that the inevitable hype that will surround the launches of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will fuel the market's overall growth. SuperData estimates that the PlayStation VR could cost anywhere from $400 to $600, which is a fair estimate considering the Rift's somewhat hefty price. Hirai says that, if PlayStation VR proves to be successful with gamers, the company plans to expand the ways in which they utilize the device, including films. Oculus on the other hand is releasing with only two options at the outset including EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale.
Yesterday's Oculus Rift price announcement was really disappointing - in the United States it will cost $599, while in Europe it's getting priced more than €740 - and this led to further speculations about how Sony will try and differ from this to make PlayStation VR as charming and successful possible.
