West Bengal Assembly passes resolution to change name of state to Bangla

Mamata Banerjee should uphold dignity of her post BJP pulls up West Bengal CM

It was passed by 189-31 votes.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has toyed with the idea of changing West Bengal's name ever since she came to power for the first time in 2011 - initially considering Paschim Banga. Tollygunge, a metro station was renamed as Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Lee Road as Satyajit Ray Dharani, Arterial Eastern Metropolitan Bypass as Biswa Bangla Sarani, and Salt Lake stadium was renamed as Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. East Bengal then became a part of Pakistan and has now turned out to become Bangladesh. The resolution was passed during the special session of the House which was convened exclusively for the objective of changing the name of the state. There was no decision regarding it.

"We are against some policies of the Centre, but that does that mean that we will call a bandh to protest it", Banerjee said, adding that when the state has to repay Rs 40,000 crore of debt she can not afford to observe any bandh. "They are now opposing the name change", Ms Banerjee commented.

Those who did not support us in this, the future won't forgive them.

"It doesn't matter who opposed it.

We are also against the policies of the Centre but we can not allow losses of crores in the name of Bandhs", she added.

Mamata's government made the suggestion to rechristen the state about a month ago, with the chief minister arguing that dropping West from the name would have practical advantages for the administration.

"I told him (Rajnath Singh) that we passed it (resolution) in the Assembly. We are with her in the federal structure", he said while claiming that the newly-constructed Niti Aayog was risky for the country. "If necessary, I shall speak to the Union home minister", stated the CM.

Upon hearing Ghosh's statement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lambasted the state BJP, and said the Trinamool Congress wouldn't allow the BJP to have its way. Left Front legislative party leader Sujan Chakraborty said that they were not against the name change.

"Uttar Pradesh is called Uttar Pradesh in all languages and not called Northern Province in English", he pointed out.
