Massive typhoon hits eastern China after killing 4 in Taiwan

Typhoon Megi weakened to a tropical storm after hitting the coastal city of Quanzhou in Fujian province early this morning.

Typhoon Megi was the third storm system to hit the island in about two weeks, following Typhoon Meranti, which left one person dead and more than 50 injured when it swept across the southern part of the island, and Typhoon Malakas.

However, typhoon Megi caused widespread damage in Taiwan, leading to a complete shutdown of schools and offices for the second day.

He said 1,400 people had been evacuated from the country's mountainous areas, while another 2,900 were now in shelter across Taiwan.

Work and classes were canceled across Taiwan as the typhoon closed in, according to Taiwan's government, while the Central Weather Bureau issued warnings for "extremely torrential rain" in some counties.

While that woman may act as a symbol for hope and determination, Taiwan did take a pretty serious walloping from Typhoon Megi.

The 268 injured included eight Japanese tourists travelling in a tour bus that turned on its side in central Taiwan.

The heaviest rainfall in Taiwan was recorded in Taipingshan in northeast Yilan County with 1,109 millimetres, but levels of over 800 millimetres were recorded in mountainous Kaohsing and Tainan in south Taiwan. Schools have closed and dozens of flights had been cancelled.

Numerous injuries were caused by falling and wind-blown objects.

Typhoon Megi reached the Chinese coastline at around 2 a.m. local time on Wednesday, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said, already less powerful after its passage over Taiwan.

The country's official news agency, Xinhua, said more than 120,000 people who worked close to shore or at sea had been moved by Fujian authorities.

Almost three million households lost power during the height of the storm in Taiwan, but electricity was restored to almost one million of them by late Tuesday night, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency. The weather forced the cancellation of 224 flights at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport.
