Versace, Versace. American Crime Story has been renewed for season 3, and FX already has its next focus - the July 1997 murder of designer Gianni Versace.
Season 3 will run for ten episodes and reportedly be called Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy will base his re-enactment of the horrific events on Vulgar Favors, a book by Vanity Fair's own Maureen Orth.
But it's not just the story that got this new season of the show bumped to an earlier premiere date.
As it turns out, American Crime Story was one of the best pieces of storytelling in any medium in 2016, with the show unearthing little-known aspects of the trial while also drawing parallels to issues of race, sexism, and income inequality in our country.
The third season is expected to be another 10-episode installment, and the plan apparently is to film virtually simultaneously with the second installment, Katrina, in Los Angeles and Miami next spring.
Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Brad Simpson have yet to reveal who will star in the upcoming installment. Tom Rob Smith, known for his work on Child 44 and London Spy, will pen the first two episodes. The plan is still to air the Katrina-focused season first, followed by Versace/Cunanan. The idea behind the new anthology series was to tackle a new true crime story every year, but most greeted the impending arrival of a Murphy-backed O.J. series with heavy skepticism. Versace was killed by Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer who had already claimed four lives before Versace.
After his death, Allegra Versace, Versace's niece and daughter of Donatella Versace, inherited around 50 per cent of the fashion empire. The producers are meeting with actors to play the titles roles with an A-list actress in mind to portray Versace's sister Donatella Versace.
