Speaking on live television, the unidentified officer said all other students at the Townville Elementary School were safe following the shooting Wednesday and that parents are being told to pick up their children at a nearby church.

The shooter never entered the school building, though, and was apprehended by firefighter Jamie Brock, a 30-year veteran of the Townville Volunteer Fire Department, according to Anderson County sheriff's Lt. Sheila Cole.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the suspect called his grandmother's mobile phone at 1.44pm on Wednesday, but she could not understand him as he was so upset.

The suspect, who was home-schooled, was emotional when he called his grandparents Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

But instead the grandparents found their son - the teen's father - dead in the home.

Dr Avery, Superintendent for South Carolina School District 4 says that school has been canceled for the rest of the week, and counseling service have been made available for both students and staff members.

Away from the home, at the elementary school 2 miles away, one male student was critically injured with a gunshot to the leg and another boy was struck in the foot.

Since Jesse Osborne is only a teen, Brock allegedly used just enough force to take him to the ground and restrain him while waiting for police to arrive.

"There are no racial undertones there". The teacher, a woman later identified as Meghan Hollingsworth, and the other boy were treated and released from a hospital.

"This incident occurred in the school where our children and the children of the community attend", Townville Fire Chief Billy McAdams said Thursday during a news conference, pausing to collect himself as he recalled the harrowing events of the day before.

He asked that the public pray for the victims of Wednesday's shooting, including 6-year-old Jacob Hall, who was last listed in critical condition. Capt. Major did say that the SC school shooting was not racially motivated and was not terrorism. Wednesday's event is also at least the 197incident in which a gun was sacked on the grounds of a school or college campus since 2013.

Skipper said the teen's mother was at work at the time of the shooting.

The school surrounded by working farms has about 300 students in its pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade classrooms.

One resident, Nely Ramirez, told People Magazine that parents were hugging their kids and "crying, crying, crying". "She didn't talk for about five minutes when I got her".

Governor Nikki Haley is due to meet with law enforcement officials in the area this evening, Jones said.

The school was identified as Townville Elementary School in Townville, South Carolina at around 1:45 p.m.
