Colin Kaepernick Donating 100% of Jersey Sales 'Back Into the Communities'

Obama Defends Kaepernick for Not Standing During National Anthem

On Aug. 26, Kaepernick sat during the singing of the national anthem, later saying he couldn't "show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color".

"The jersey sales jumped because of people's belief that there can be change", he said.

"I'm not anti-American", Kaepernick said after his second game protesting. "On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL. I believe in the people, and WE can be the change!" he concluded.

People siding with Kaepernick's stance on racial inequality and police brutality have taken to websites to purchase his jersey, and sales have reportedly soared.

The protest, which was first noticed by the media in a pre-season game against the Green Bay Packers on August 26, has added to the debate over the subjects of race, patriotism, sports protest and violence by and against police.

In the two weeks since Kaepernick was first photographed sitting on the bench during the anthem before a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, there have been supporters and dissenters of his actions.

Prior to the high-profile protest, the jersey bearing Kaepernick's name and number had been the 20th most popular of all those belonging to 49ers players, online sports publication SB Nation reported over the weekend. "And we can make this country better, and that they believe I was someone who could help that change". The 49ers have said Kaepernick is within his constitutional right to protest. "I've been in this position before". Now, however, the man with the $114 million contract is the 49ers backup quarterback after losing the job to Blaine Gabbert, who is basically a scrub.

The NFL commissioner teetered on both sides when asked about Kaepernick, avoiding controversy by telling the Associated Press, "I don't necessarily agree with what he's doing".

Obama called Kaepernick's decision "messy", but said it's "the way democracy works". The 49ers went on to reach Super Bowl XLVII, where they came within 5 yards of a go-ahead touchdown in the eventual 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. "So I continue to work and prepare for when that next opportunity comes".

As the National Football League opens its regular season this weekend, other players will have a chance to join the protest.
