Robby Gordon's father and stepmother found dead in their Southern California home

Very shocking news involving former NASCAR driver Robby Grodon's father, Robert Gordon, strangling his wife Sharon Gordon, to death, and then committing suicide by shooting himself afterwards, has emerged.

The father of race vehicle driver Robby Gordon shot himself to death after strangling his wife in their Orange County, California, home, the Orange County Coroner's office said. Investigators do not believe a suspect is at large, but Orange police Lt. Fred Lopez declined to say how the pair died.

The Gordon family is known for racing, as Huntley Gordon, Robert's father and Robby's great-grandfather, raced Indy cars in the early 1900s.

Neighbor Jill Dombroske said the Gordons were longtime residents of the quiet neighborhood where large homes sit on expansive hillside properties and many people own horses.

Robby Gordon now races in an off-road series he created in 2013 called Speed Energy Formula Off-Road, following the path of his father. "He has his truck and he delivers personally", Saunders said. Autopsies were pending as part of the ongoing investigation, Lopez said.

With that being said, medical examiners have now confirmed the cause of death-and it has to be Robby's worst nightmare.

Johnson and the elder Gordon remained in contact and Johnson on Thursday tweeted a picture of them once talking in the pits at a NASCAR race.

NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson also jumped to his Twitter account to offer his condolences.

CHICAGO (AP) - Six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson remembers vividly the first time he rode in an off-road desert vehicle with "Baja Bob" Gordon about 25 years ago.

In fact, the series is running a race this weekend which is scheduled to go on as planned. Robby spent 19 years in NASCAR racing, won three Cup races and maintains a presence in the stock auto racing hub of Charlotte, N.C.

One of Bob Gordon's daughters, Beccy Hunter-Reay, is married to Verizon IndyCar Series driver Ryan Hunter-Reay. His best finish was fourth in 1999, losing when he ran out of fuel in the closing laps. He started the Indianapolis 500 on 10 occasions, competed in the NASCAR circuit for over 20 years and also participated in off-road racing events.

The racer told reporters he and his three sisters, one of which gave birth to Robert's grandson on Wednesday, were devastated.
