Taylor Mackenzie’s innovative ‘mysquares’ campaign to help fund his racing, is becoming a success, according to the 18 year-old Scot, who recently signed for Mar-Train Racing to compete in the 2012 British Supersport championship.
By purchasing squares on his helmet for £100 each, race fans or companies interested in promoting their name or product can help to support his racing career. Mysquares sponsors will also benefit from monthly prize draws with chances to win signed leathers, guest passes and trackdays.
Speaking about his campaign Taylor said: “At the end of last season I was thinking of ways to generate funds when a friend and I came up with the ‘mysquares’ idea. Now I’m racing in the British Supersport series I hope it encourages people to help out while following my progress throughout the season.
When asked about how it is going so far he said, “The response to the campaign has been really good. It’s a difficult time for everyone, so to have support from such a wide variety of people is great. The supporters so far have been from all walks of life - from companies promoting their businesses, to people buying them as presents, to family members who think putting embarrassing pictures of me on there is a good idea!”
Mackenzie’s career in 125cc grands prix was cut short after one season with WorldWide Race when a major sponsor ran into financial difficulty. With sports sponsorship throughout Europe suffering from the financial crisis, the success of ‘mysquares’ could point the way to a new era of crowd-sourced funding for motorcycle racers.
The deadline for images to be sent is 28th February. Full details of the mysquares campaign are on Taylor Mackenzie’s website
