BMW has had to issue a second software patch to dealers for the S1000RR after two bikes getting the first software update, to introduce a new electronic rev limit during the running in preiod, suffered instrument failure.

BMW have said they do not yet know the reasons for the failure.

The patch was needed because of some customers, mainly race teams, were not paying attention to the BMW running in procedure as written in the owner manual.

The manual states that the engine should be kept under 7000rpm for the first 185 miles and then under 9000rpm upto 600 miles.

The software patch means that all motorcycles will now have the rev limit imposed until it is electronically removed at the point of first service 600 miles.

BMW spokesman Scott Grimsdall said: “This problem has affected a couple of bikes by stopping the instruments from working. The revised software patch will stop it happening again and the two bikes are now fixed with new instruments.”

BMW originally held back delivery of the S1000RR motorcycle to customers until March 1st whilst they waited for the software patch.
