USA officials and the DEA, which has had a bumpy relationship with its Mexican counterparts, took no credit and congratulated Mexico on the capture.
Guzman was recaptured in his home state of Sinaloa on Friday, six months after he escaped from a maximum-security prison near Mexico City.
On July 11, after 17 months at the Altiplano maximum-security prison in central Mexico, Guzman slipped through a hole in his cell's shower, climbed on a motorcycle mounted on rails, and traveled 1.5 kilometers (one mile) through a tunnel.
February 27, 2015: Servando "La Tuta" Gomez, one of world's most-wanted drug bosses who had terrorized Michoacan state, is announced captured by federal police.
U.S. and Mexican law enforcement officials say Guzman then flew to his home patch on the Sinaloa-Durango state border because he is revered as a modern-day Robin Hood in the region. After Guzman's first prison break, violence began to creep up in Mexico and the situation deteriorated during the 2006-2012 rule of Pena Nieto's predecessor Felipe Calderon, when almost 70,000 people lost their lives in gang-related mayhem. Guzman's capture will likely help Pena Nieto recover in opinion polls, analysts said.
Five people were killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the clash at a house in an upscale neighborhood of Los Mochis.
Guzman is included in at least seven indictments in the US.
Guzman popped down a hidden hatch in the shower of his cell and fled his so-called maximum-security prison through a tunnel estimated to have taken a year to construct. Guzman's arrest is a major boost for President Enrique Pena Nieto, who was highly embarrassed by last year's jailbreak, Guzman's second in 15 years.
"The only way that the government of Mexico is going to ensure absolutely that they don't go through another embarrassing situation, another embarrassing escape, is to extradite him to the United States", he said.
The U.S. attorney general, Loretta Lynch, released a statement calling Guzman's capture a "blow to the worldwide drug-trafficking syndicate he is alleged to have led". Pena Nieto gave no details in his televised speech, saying only that "careful and intensive intelligence work was carried out for months" leading up to the arrest.
Marines formed a cordon around the block on Saturday morning, and said they believed Guzman had been in the property for around 48 hours before the raid was launched.
Born in Badiraguato in Sinaloa state, Guzman started his career in the drug trade working for Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, according to Time magazine in 2009.
The Sinaloa cartel moves drugs by land, air and sea, including cargo aircraft, private aircraft, buses, fishing vessels and even submarines, the Justice Department has said.
Authorities first arrested Guzman in Guatemala in 1993.
Officially, Murillo Karam said Guzman would not be extradited until he finished serving his time in Mexico, a sentiment echoed by Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Eduardo Medina-Mora.
Guzman escaped through storm drains and used a manhole to get to the street. "The easiest thing would be to swiftly extradite "Chapo" Guzman and, once again, the Mexican state shows that it doesn't have the strength to punish those who commit crimes in our territory", Barbosa said.
