There’s a stigma attached to riding motorcycles, particularly if you happen to ride a Harley-Davidson, smoke a cigar, wear a leather waistcoat and have a goatee beard. This leads me nicely to the new series on the Discovery Channel, The Devil’s Ride.
The Devil’s Ride follows The Laffing Devils motorcycle club in San Diego, California. Most of these guys are ex-military, smoke fat cigars, ride Harley’s and seemingly, metaphorically, wave their dicks about and think they’re in the Sons of Anarchy for real. The other half of the group are ex druggies.
In episode one we see a ‘prospect’ – these are the new guys to the club who have to show their respect for a year before they get ‘patched’ (which means they can sew a patch on their leather waistcoat…) - beat the shit out of a cameraman for just doing what cameramen do, take photos. Just happens this cameraman decided to take photos of the clubs ‘old ladies’ (the WAGs of the club). For beating the crap out of the cameraman he gets praised by the ‘elders’.
We also see a local store hire some of the motorcycle clubs members to serve as protection to the store, I mean seriously, too many movies or what here?
Then, just to top it off, you see some of the members in a shooting range with guns that would make the British army wince.
Frankly I’m ashamed this stuff goes on and I’m ashamed someone decided to follow them around with a camera and make a documentary out of it.
If you want to see bikes and want to see guns, stick with Orange County Choppers and American Guns.
