Moto2 Race Report & Results - Misano 2012

by Mark Appleton

Marc Marquez got the start you’d expect from pole position with Pol Espargaro and Andrea Iannone close behind. Britain’s Scott Redding also got a great start and found himself in fourth position early on.

Takaaki Nakagami was the man on the move as he took Redding on the first lap and did get up to third past Espargaro but Espargaro hit straight back.

On lap three Iannone surprised Marquez by taking the lead and the two of them did their best to pull away from the rest of the pack until, on lap four, there was a red flag.

Gino Rea’s bike had completely exploded with smoke pouring out as well as oil being spilled all over the track which is the reason for the stoppage.

This meant that we had essentially had a three-lap qualifying race and the riders would be re-starting from their positions at the end of lap three and racing for 14 laps.

At the restart Iannone got the start he needed with Marquez close behind, Redding got shuffled back whilst his team mate Mika Kallio shot up to fifth, however Esteve Rabat benefited the most as he found himself in third position.

On the second lap Marquez had a massive moment as the back stepped out on the final corner which spooked him enough for him to lose a position to Espargaro. Iannone meanwhile was now 1.2 seconds ahead of second placed Espargaro with 11 laps to go.

As the laps ticked off we saw Iannone drop .3 seconds to second place man Pol Espargaro who was himself just under a second ahead of third place Marquez.

Kallio charged past Rabat to take fourth whilst Marquez was catching Espargaro who was catching Iannone whilst Takahashi and Corsi both crashed out.

The three riders at the front were now 2.3 seconds ahead of fourth placed Kallio but were less than a bike length was between each of them with just four laps to go.

Half-way round lap four Iannone ran wide and Espargaro took the lead and just three corners later Marquez past him as well as the race leader got shuffled back to third in the same amount of corners.

As the final lap came round is was all down to Espargaro and Marquez as Iannone had been dropped off. Marquez made a lunge and took the lead off Espargaro, he immediately tried to hit back but Marquez simply stuffed it up the inside.

The next few corners saw more of the same, Espargaro would take Marquez only for Marquez to hit straight back in the next corner and on the final corner Marquez came out on top to cross the line for the win.
