Police probe man's claim he shot officer in Allah's name

Man suspected of shooting US policeman 'pledged allegiance to IS'

He was shot three times in the arm as he sat in his police auto.

The officer has been left seriously wounded after an attempt to "assassinate" him in an ambush-style attack while sitting in his patrol auto.

"We have some video we captured of this".

"We're just lucky, that's all I can say", Ross continued.

"Shots fired...I'm bleeding heavily!" he yelled, as he requested back-up.

His sister-in-law Ashley Hartnett wrote on Facebook: "Jesse you're a super hero".

Castro gave a play-by-play of what happened next.

This story has been corrected to show the officer's first name is spelled Jesse, not Jessie. In the meantime, the officer's wounds did not keep him down.

Hartnett fired, hitting the fleeing man in the buttocks.

The suspect ran away but was quickly apprehended by other officers, authorities said.

The officer's aunt, Cynthia Hartnett, said he was expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect was identified as Edward Archer.

Police say Archer pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and said he follows Allah in an interview after his arrest. Investigators said he had no connection to terrorism. "I pledge my allegiance to the Islamic State and that's why I did what I did", police homicide Capt. James Clarke told CNN.

He's being treated for wounds that are not life-threatening, and condition is unknown. "It is abhorrent", he said. "It is awful and it does not represent the religion or any of its teachings". The suspect fired at least 13 times, emptying the 9mm handgun he was shooting, Ross said.

Philadelphia's police commissioner told reporters the confessed shooter's gun belonged to a police officer and was reported stolen in 2013.

Holliday downplayed any connection between Archer's religious beliefs and his alleged behavior Thursday night.

Hartnett's colleagues were astonished he survived.

"He walks up to the vehicle and starts firing shots".

"It should have been 100 times worse".

On Thursday, a man wearing a vest of fake explosives and wielding a knife tried to attack officers at a Paris police station. He underwent surgery shortly after the shooting.
