Even this morning, news outlets are freaking out because the candidate went on a late-night Tweet tirade, accusing Machado of making a sex tape and calling her "disgusting".

Clinton pointed to 1996 pageant victor Machado in the first presidential debate on Monday to stress Trump's poor treatment of women, noting Trump had belittled her after she gained weight.

Trump called Machado "disgusting" in a tweetstorm early Friday morning, while referencing an alleged sex tape. It also risks calling further attention to the thrice-married Trump's own history with women. Ted Cruz, both of whom have their own designs on the White House, argue a Trump presidency would at least give them a chance of implementing conservative legislation in Congress, while a Clinton White House would be nothing more than an impenetrable roadblock.

He implied his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton had secured United States citizenship for Venezuelan-born Ms Machado. Trump's single-minded, wounded vitriol in this response is reminiscent of his past public attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel and the Khan family, and it's a display of out-of-control, self-destructive energy that plays directly into the public's worst perceptions of him.

He said this week that Ms Machado had gained "a massive amount of weight", adding that it was "a real problem". She repeated her pledge of "absolute support for Secretary Clinton, on behalf of all women".

Trump ignored questions from reporters about whether he regretted the tweets as he toured the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Mrs Clinton's spokesman Brian Fallon took to Twitter to ask of Trump, "What kind of human being is this?"

She added that there are less-than-stellar moments in her personal history, and did not deny the allegation when CNN's Anderson Cooper asked her about media reports that she drove a getaway vehicle during an attempted murder allegedly committed by her then-boyfriend.

Clinton's campaign has highlighted Machado's status as a new American and her plans to cast her first vote for Clinton.
