Choosing the right bike already involves compromises. As a motorcyclist today you will be asking for performance, fuel economy, practicality, comfort and value for money. But you wouldn’t compromise on your friends or your ability to enjoy a social ride with them. For many riders considering moving from a motorcycle to a scooter, maintaining the ‘social’ aspect of riding with friends offers real challenges.
However, the new Aprilia SRV850 offers a solution. It brings motorcycle performance and desirability to the maxi-scooter segment when it hits the UK in February.
The SRV850 - the most powerful scooter on the market - will appear on dealership floors in February, with a retail price of £7,799.
Available in black or white, the SRV850 is unrivalled in power and is aimed at riders who want the daily practicality of a scooter without sacrificing any of the performance, handling and braking of a motorcycle.
The SRV850 features the most emotive engine to ever power a scooter. Its soulful 839cc V-twin motorcycle powerplant makes a class-leading 76bhp and provides the noise, thrills and riding involvement you’d expect from an Italian engine.
The SRV850 features the same 839cc liquid-cooled, 4v per cylinder, V-twin engine found in the Aprilia Mana 850. Thanks to a new optimised ECU, it now reaches a maximum power of 76bhp at 7,750rpm and a maximum torque of 76.5Nm at 6,000rpm, placing it comfortably at the top of the maxi-scooter category.
Two new oxygen probes allow the ECU to optimise the fuel-oil mixture for the two cylinders, resulting in user-friendly increased torque flexibility at medium revs. The new system also improves fuel economy and reduces emissions so much that it already meets the future (stricter) requirements for Euro 4 approval.
The generous power of the SRV’s engine demands a superb chassis. The SRV850 is 5kg lighter than a Gilera GP800. The double cradle frame of the Aprilia SRV 850 is made of steel trellis pipes with reinforcing and rigidity plates.
Simulations and road tests have demonstrated that the SRV850 has a coefficient of stability at full power similar to a motorcycle (1 rad/sec) and almost twice as high as a conventional scooter. This translates to a maxi scooter that can reach lean angles of 45°, with exceptional stability and extraordinary road holding.
Handling is improved further by a lightweight 16” wheel at the front and a 15” wheel at the rear, both made from aluminium to minimise unsprung mass and guarantee riding precision. These lightweight wheels are shod with a 120/70 front tyre and a 160/60 rear.
The Aprilia SRV850 features superior stopping power, provided by Brembo Gold Series 2-piston floating calipers and two 300mm discs on the front. On the rear sits a 280mm disc and 2-piston floating caliper. As with all Aprilia sports bikes, braided metal brake hoses are factory fitted. In order to give the rider even more precise braking control, the front and rear brake levers are both adjustable, with 4 positions available.
