Marc Marquez made a fantastic start from pole position and led into the first two corners, however Andrea Iannone swalloed him up on the next corner and Marquez was beaten up and dropped to fourth.
Mike di Meglio, Julian Simon and Gino Rea all crashed out on the first lap. Meanwhile at the front after the first lap Iannone led with Toni Elias, Marquez, Dominique Aegerter and Pol Espargaro all chasing.
Roberto Rolfo was forced into the pits early on for a ride-through penalty owing to a jump-start.
At the front Iannone was still leading with Marquez and Thomas Luthi now chasing, they had a second or so gap back to Espargaro who in turn had a half-second or so gap back to, the chasing pack.
With 16 laps remaining Marquez had regrouped enough to take the lead but it was short lived as Iannone got past him on the straight, Luthi was still in third watching on but this had all allowed Espargaro to catch the front three.
Marquez and Iannone had a great battle over the next few laps swapping first place every other corner with Luthi and Espargaro watching on.
With just seven laps to go Toni Elias fell at the left hander on the stadium section and just seemed resigned to not restarting.
With three laps to go there was an awful crash from Pol Espargaro, first of all Marquez lost the bike but kept it upright with his knee as he got back upright he slammed into Espargaro who fell hard and ended up in the kitty litter not looking his best.
As the race continued Luthi and Iannone were battling like maniacs at the front, chopping and changing positions with Marquez doing his best to get back with the two.
But, after frantic stuff throughout, it was Andrea Iannone who crossed the line to take the win.
The crash involving Espargaró and Márquez was subsequently investigated by Race Direction, which issued Márquez with 60-second penalty, relegating him to 23rd spot. This promoted Espargaró’s teammate Rabat into third, while Márquez drops to fourth in the championship table behind Lüthi, Espargaró and Iannone. This penalty was subsequently cancelled after an appeal by the Repsol Team.
